You may feel like you are always having to deal with problems or you are always unhappy or always feeling depressed or stressed. You may constantly be moaning about things, seeing things negatively, focusing on the low points and feeling sorry for yourself. Things may seemingly always go wrong and everything seems like hard work, and you crave sympathy and want people to see your struggle.
There is a possibility that your depression has become a habit. You have become conditioned to feeling like that and it has become the norm for you. You have allowed these thoughts and feelings and behaviours to become a habit and the more it has become a habit, the more difficult it is to stop.
Humans are quite good at having habits of all different kinds because we get used to things and become set in our nature. Depression and feeling low can become a habit. We become used to it: the feelings we have, the way we see things. The way we act and react to situations can all become habitual. You have become used to things going wrong, you expect that to happen, you are used to being unhappy so you are not expecting to be happy, and in a way you feel uncomfortable and uneasy if things are good, and you are feeling happy because that doesnât feel right.
The good news is that habits can be kicked into touch. You can change, and the habit of feeling low and depressed can be removed. But to kick this habit you need to recognise that it is a habit that you can overcome and effectively be a much happier, positive person as a result, and start getting used to that and make being happy a habit. âWe first make our habits and then our habits make us.â
